Weather looks crappy like it has been all day, and as some of you know, I'm merely hours away from AG batch #1. I'm going to kinda wing it from a kit from the LHBS, but want to do Ed Wort's IPA clone on Sunday (need to get a starter for it going tonight)

Anyway, who's brewing and going to be lurking on HBT so when I start freaking out, someone will tell me to RDWAHAHB?

:ban: :rockin: :mug: :tank:

Dude, this weather is the opposite of crappy. It's the first water that's fallen from the sky in like 2 months. I bathe in its goodness!

I might be around lurking, but not brewing. Good luck, AG is crazy fun! Plus you get an hour or so to chill out while the mash is converting. Hit up the chat if you have issues. I might be there.

I assume the extra "a" in RDWHAHB stands for "*******"...as in, Relax! Don't worry, *******! Have a homebrew! :D

yes, you are very observant, the A is for *******! :D

I am so excited, and I just can't hide it...oh wait, that's kinda like that 80's song....I digress....

I will say yeah, the rain is much needed, but you get what I'm saying though....while the mash is chillin I'm making a hop strainer bag....and getting ready to bottle my Steam Beer...which technically was my first AG, but I just watched....I'm actually doing the first AG tonight!!!! :D :D :D

I remember my first one. Wasn't quite as excited as you are, though...but it wasn't a big step for me. The grain:extract ratio of my PM's had been getting bigger and bigger, and then one day I just didn't add any extract at all. Not the best beer in the world, but I think the yeast was weird.

Hehe, you just watched, but tonight is the real deal. Are you brewing or making porn? :D

I'm making brew porn if that counts....I still need a chiller, but I think I'm just going to use my big ass tub for chilling kegs with a bunch of ice and water in it to cool it.....I think I'll be fine that way

IC for sure this week will be bought or made

ME! Belgian Specialty Ale. Wife has to pull all night duty for her unit, so I'll have an empty house and a new yard hose that will make brewing WAYYYYY easier. Also got a second fridge today so I can have like... 4 kegs on tap at a time? RAGING!

And, yea, I'll be lurking as always as well.

I almost bought a new hose, but I want to rethink how I'm going to route it, split it, and where a big inline filter is going too

Relax, then get a copy of Beer Smith. You put in the recipe, select what mash method you're using (batch sparge, decoctions, etc) and it just prints out a brew sheet with the times and water temps all right on the sheet.

It needs to be dialed in, but once you get it spot on, it's all good in the hood.

I need a copy of that....I just downloaded the trial today, made up EdWort's Stone IPA clone, looks wicked easy.....oh wait, I see what you are saying.....neat

hells yeah. We live by that brew sheet on brewday.

Don't know what kind of thermometer you have, but we have a nice one with a countdown timer as well, so it moves from just a thermometer to our hop timer so we know when to add hops.

Just remember to preheat your mash tun, and pray to god your false bottom/braid doesn't get stuck up/float/come off while you're mashing.

Also remember - the more you F it up, the more likely it is to be great beer you can't reproduce! I've managed to screw up something every time I make my Saison. Either someone drops a hydrometer, or the false bottom flips over or something.

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Just turned the burner back on for the boil!

Things [I think] are going very well :D:ban::D:ban:

I decided to hold off and give my starters an extra day and two (brewing sunday as well). Boil overs happen... a lot if you have a small boiler like me. My turkey fryer is like 7 or 7.5 gallons and I get a boil over EVERY time. Can't wait to upgrade. Hopefully not in the too distant future.

I hear ya man, I want a bigger kettle already

Next problem....my hop strainer setup melted and the barcode label was floating around in the wort. Oh well, she's chilling now, almost time to rack her into the primary. We'll see how this turns out in a few weeks

Sounds like yer havin a great time. We all been there.

I just had four more cornies show up today so I've been cleaning them up all night.\\

I have my set up ready for 10 gallons of my Blue Balls tomorrow morning though.

Racked my Nierra Sevada off to some kegs for secondary conditioning. Bottled up some of my NewCastle to make rom in my keezer.

And of course, cleaned up the bottles from my drinking session with Edwort last night.

well, the summary of tonight:

A great boilover!
Hop strainer contraption like Lil Sparky made melted on me :(
Chilled the most wort I've made quickest with the big tub of ice water, 4 grocery bags of ice, and some frozen water bottles
Managed to make the garage floor sticky from the boilover (will scrub tomorrow)
Brew session was 4.5 hours long (I cleaned up as I went)
and my "Munich Helles Lite" aka "Club Level Lite" got its big starter and had an OG of 1.036 and tasted sweeter than I expected

I'm going to the bar with some buddies, and I EXPECT bubbling in the airlock upon my arrival. Then some sleep, then getting ready to tailgate for U of Md's homecoming game tomorrow night!

This [I think] is a great start to the weekend!

And countless and many thanks for everyones help along the way....I never would have guessed I'd be doing my first AG brew 6 months after my first extract.
