In the past, when cold crashing, I have just been putting the Co2 tank and gauge in the fridge with the carboy so I could put a few lbs of Co2 on the carboy as it contracts. Since putting the tank and gauge in the fridge is not a good practice for a variety of reasons, I was thinking of running the gas line through the fridge wall. My question is, where is the best place to do this? I have no idea where the cooling coils are, sides or rear of fridge? Has anyone done this, and if so, any thing else I should consider?

I agree with GilSwill on the approach. I have a minifridge made to be a kegerator, and it has a hole in the rear on the upper corner for a gas line. I would think a corner is the best place to put a hole while avoiding cooling coils, but as suggested above, penetrate the skin look inside.
