Ok just finished a wheat AG session and my efficincy droped from high 70's to about 70. I did a protein rest at 122 with 9 qt and added 7 qt to bring up to 150 for 45 min. Batch sparged twice ended up with 7 gal into pot and 5.25 into fermenter with .5 gal of trub
Grain bill.
4 lb two row
4 lb wheat
1 lb munich10
.5 lb carapils
OG .044

Any one else experience an efficincy drop with wheat?

If you crushed your wheat malt the same as you crush your barley, your efficiency will suffer.

Wheat malt needs a finder crush. It's a whole kernel, not a hull and kernel. I usually run my wheat malt through the mill twice to get it really good and crushed up.

I have a Barly Crusher and just ran everything through at the same time. So if I understand what your saying I shoud run the wheat through seperate and at a finer crush or through twice? Guess I'll try that next time. Thanks BierMuncher.
