What kind of apple is this?

My neighbor has this apple tree and I was going to ask if I could harvest for some cider but not sure what type they are. They look like some sort of crab apples - any idea what they are?

Take a close up photo when the apple is ripe and note when the ripening occurs and that will help narrow it down.
I can't tell what size they are from your picture.
If the apples are any good, perhaps offer to prune the tree for your neighbor, you'll get more apples next time.
