Back home, with a HB oatmeal stout. Too cold and rainy to sit outside.

I figured I’d try to get my mind off the US elections today, and what better way than German beer. Then this surprise!

I guess all the shipping and sitting in warehouses from here to there can cause this. I let it settle down a bit, which it needed. Zittauer Burgerbrau Original, Since 1845. This is a yummy and fantastic low ABV brew, 4.1% ABV. That means I can drink two of them, right?

Style-wise, I’m placing it somewhere between a Helles and a Pilsner. Just a touch hoppy to call it a Helles. Not quite hoppy enough to be called a Pils. Maybe that’s why they call it their Original. Designed to please the masses!

This is a terrific brew, give it a try some time. Just stand back when you open it!

Tis the season for darker brews. Well at least it gives me a good excuse to drink and brew a fair share of them.

Had this one at a pub earlier, apologies for the awful lighting.
Samuel Smith Chocolate Stout

And drinking this one now. Picked it up at the store on a whim. Not bad for the price, some decent coffee notes in the taste and aroma. A bit lighter on the chocolate notes however. All in all not a bad experience.

These green bottles sure look pretty. They do stress me out a bit though. I’m still trying to figure out the rationale here, it must be a marketing thing. Years ago we’d buy green–bottled German beer and it always had that skunky light-struck taste to it. Of course we had no idea that’s what it was. We just knew that it was German beer, and that meant it had to be good stuff! “Hey, that’s the way it’s supposed to taste!”

Luckily, this Einbecker Winter Bock has been safely stored and lagered at 38F for the past 6 months in the Beermeister32 bierhoard. It’s a fantastic brew, and not lightstruck in the slightest! Whew! Dodged that one! They have another name for it – Vollmundiger Dopplebock which loosely translates as “More Full-Bodied Double Bock.”

Based out of Einbeck, ground-zero for the Bock World, Einbecker’s Winterbock weighs in at a heavy 7.5% ABV. Super malty and very restrained hopping, tastes a lot like the “-ator” type German lagers. It’s a big, boozy, malty beer. Too bad it’s packaged in these babyish 11.2 ounce teaser bottles. I guess in a perfect world these would be 500ml minimum and in a UV resistant brown glass. Great beer! Prost!

But it looks fantastic!
Thanks. It does taste pretty good right now, just not at all how I planned it to end up. I had an issue when I was transferring the beer to the dry hop keg which caused me ditch that plan and transfer it directly to the fermentation-purged serving keg. I ended up having to dry hop it by opening the serving keg lid and drop a hop sack of dry hops in. I purged the full keg a bunch of times but I'm fearful that this one's going to show signs of being oxidized before I can drink it all. Serving it at the festival will mean it will be consumed quite fresh, plus it should allow me to brew something else sooner.

Having one or maybe four of these today, struggling with a bit of a homebrew shortage while things are carbing up and fermenting.

I was replying to Rum on the docks I'm shotgun Craig and I'm previously made a batch of dark Hefeweizen but I altered the original recipe it was a 5 gallon batch which I made I used chocolate malt and and wheat but I also added two 10 oz bottles of heavy thick molasses and 4 lb of brown sugar light brown sugar and I think that ABV was around 17 I used red star Premier blank yeast now I've never drinking a beer that was that strong but actually this come out very nice you can't drink it fast or if you do it hit you real quick but it's a good sipping beer it has a great afternoon taste your room is good the Hops are just right it was an experiment that luckily turned out positively great days ahead peace

Thanks for ^that^ as it may inspire me to check them out. Schilling Beer Company in Littleton NH is a 15 minute drive from my house in Franconia but I haven't had the pleasure of visiting them - yet. I just looked at their web site and they are certainly interesting!

Cheers!

[edit] My boys and their families are up at our NH house and when I suggested they check out Schilling they let me know they love the place. Apparently I'm the only male in the family that hasn't been there 🤷‍♂️
