Not a huge fan of the style because they tend to be just roasty enough to interfere with the expression of the hops. Southern Tier Iniquity is a nice one though. 21A's Back in Black is also very good.
back in black was voted one of the 25 best beers on earth by mens journal. though I wouldn't qualify them as experts in any way shape or form, it's worth a try.
Stone's Sublimely Self Righteous is very good. One that I would classify as a black IPA, but isn't labeled as such is Heavy Sea's Rye Porter. That thing is epically delicious, and more like a black IPA than a porter at all.
I just had a Otter Creek Black IPA a couple days ago. I was really impressed with it, it was delicious! Kind of different than other black IPA's I've had though...it had suprisingly little malt flavor considering that its color is black as night. That's not necessarily a bad thing though.
I recommend 21st Amendment's Back in Black as well. Strong hoppiness, with the roasted malt smoothing out in the end. Really well done, the roast doesn't dominate but still maintains a noticeable presence.
I brewed a clone of HUB's Secession. I haven't had the original, but I like my clone. Just a hint of roasty flavors. It called for a London Ale yeast, so it has a more estery profile than others.
