Has anyone seen this happen in their first fermentation stage?

i am not sure if it is yeast strings because there is so much

would it be safe to consume and what causes it to do this?

thanks in advance

It's fine. Bubbles of carbon dioxide release from the sunken pellicle and carry up a little stream of the microbes/pellicle with it.

Perfect thanks, would these bits need to be included if i do another batch or can they be discarded?

The normal process is to include some or all of the pellicle along with some of the liquid in the next batch.
