I'm currently drinking a Weihenstephaner Dunkelweiss, and they claim on the label that it is brewed under the purity law of 1516.

How is this possible that a wheat beer adheres to the law, given that the law stipulates only barley (no wheat). I know they revised it, and it isn't actual legislation any longer, but wouldn't it stand to reason that if they are claiming this, they mean the original 1516 law?

Anyway, it doesn't really matter since the beer is delicious, but I was just curious if anyone knew more about Weihenstephaner than I.

the purity law of 1516 as amended recently etc etc.

but really, no. they add minerals to their water, so that's a blatant violation as well. but it doesn't matter because there's nobody regulating or enforcing the 'law' because it was struck down by the EU.
