Vanilla additions

Any thoughts on the best way to add vanilla? I've tried it in the boil and in the secondary and I can't quite figure it out for my liking.

What didn't you like about those methods? Intensity? We can't figure your goal without you stating it!

Ya in the winter ale that has become recently carbonated I added on vanilla pod split in the middle to the secondary for 2 weeks and it overtook any malt flavors, I also in a scotch ale added three pods in the boil and the was not even a hint, I want something right in the middle! Haha
