I just built a mash tun using a 10 gallon rubbermaid beverage cooler. After installing the statinless steel spigot, I couldn't get it to stop leaking. I added plumber's putty on the outside of the cooler and can't see any pushing through to the inside. The plumber's putty did the trick, but now I'm wondering if it was a smart move. Will I have problems with future batches getting contaminated? Will the beer be safe to drink?

Plumber's putty is nasty stuff, I wouldn't want it around my beer. It's completely safe though.

Without knowing exactly what kind of parts were used, it's hard to suggest ways to correct the leak. I can tell you that fixing a leak from the outside of a cooler is a good way to start a small lifelong batch of Berliner Weiss right in the insulation of the cooler.
