I am graduating to all grain brewing and recently acquired a used grainfather t500. It’s missing the counterflow chiller and was wondering if there are any downside to using an immersion chiller instead. Has anyone tried this with good results?

Thanks!

Two downsides that I can think of. One is that it may take longer to cool the wort than a counterflow chilller and the other is that if may take more time and effort to clean the immersion chiller, neither of which have a significant impact on the beer produced.

Thanks for the response. Isn’t it the other way? Shouldn’t cleaning a counterflow chiller take longer?

Seems if it fits, it should work. Get it close to the bottom of possible. I do this for my Anvil, similar setup and concept. I put it (the IC) in the moment I turn the heat off, let it sanitize (it starts clean of course and the heat takes care of the rest). I have an external pump to recirculate the wort and it cools off super quickly. You've got it built in and so the combo should do well.

I know an Anvil isn't a Grainfather but maybe similar enough that helps?
