Half inch will work. You'll need two barbed hose fittings, 1/2 FNPT to 1/2 barb for both ends of the pump head. Or you can stick a ball valve on the flow out end and barb out of that but then you'd need a 1/2 MNPT instead of female...

I've used the 1/2" Silicone tubing that you can get from Austin, MoreBeer, McMaster, and lots of other places. It's heat tolerant to 450F, certified food grade, is translucent so you can see the flow of water/wort, and flexible. I've been using it for almost a year now, and no complaints so far. It's spendy at about $2.10/foot, but it's the right stuff for the job and worth it IMHO. You can grab some cheap 1/2" NPT -> 1/2" barb fittings and some SS hose clamps, or use quick disconnects of varying flavors. I opted for semi-cheap brass QD's from McMaster-Carr.

I use the silicone too but have the hi temp tan tubing NB sells on my old IC and that stuff works fine too. Prefer the silicone as it feels better in your hands and looks better too as it doesn't get as dirty it seems...

I'm trying to figure out the fittings i need based on this simpleton drawing:

Do I need any QD's on the pump for a RIMS setup?

I'm sure I need male QD's on everything else and can move the hoses around..

Crap drawing but can you see where I'm going and any advice on what I need?

Male QD: Kettle (1), Cooler (1), Pump (2)
Female QD: 2 6' sections of tubing: (4)
I see that this would work, I'm just trying to wrap my mind around this.

Why do I need QD's at both ends of the pump? I'm not challenging you, I just don't know. Thanks!

You don't, but it's much easier to clean the hoses that way. You could use a barbed fitting and take the hoses off to drain/clean each brew day, but the male QD's are cheap.

I just got mine on Tuesday of this week. Haven't hooked it up yet, but got it. Just placed an order @ Mc Master as well. Still need the tubing. :)

If you need 1/2 stainless full couplings to weld in, check out

If you are planning to buy the pump, check this item on E-bay. I just bought one at a very good price ($107.00 and free shipping!).

Hope this help.

It definitely was a bargain a that price. It is the best price I have seen for a new March 809 pump. Let me know how it goes with your installation!:rockin:
