Made a cream ale yesterday. Apparently had ways to much boil off and would up with a little over 4 gallons. OG was 1.055. So I added about a gallon and a quarter to make it 5.25. Now OG is 1.037. Was hoping to hit 1.042. Any problem with this?

The problem is that your top off water wasn't mixed with the wort sufficiently. It's very difficult to adequately mix wort with cold water. It just wants to stratify into layers. Just assume that the OG is what the kit says it should be.

No problem, you still made beer. Just with a lower abv. You can call it a "session" of "lawn mower" beer.

That's a great point that BB made.

Exactly this. It is very difficult to get it homogenized in a reasonable amount of time. If you know your pre-top off volume and gravity and the amount of water you added, you can always just do the math..
