How much can I benefit from going to a HERMS/RIMS setup? I want to start lagering at some point and I am wondering if it is necessary.

All that is needed to lager is somewhere to ferment ~ 50* and somewhere to lager (store) your beer at 30-40*.

HERMS/RIMS will give you more control on your mashing temps, and allow you to step up your temps more easily. You can step up without these with decoction mashes or step infusions (adding hot water to your grist).
