Hey Guys,

Planning to do a road trip to Grand Canyon and planning to stop by Phoenix, AZ on the way there. Hoping y'all can help me out and throw out some suggestions on what to do in Phoenix. Looking for things that are unique to the area that can't really be done anywhere else. Also looking for a good restaurant and places to go bar hopping/pub crawling at night. Planning to be there for a day, maybe another day on the way back if there's a lot to do there.

Thanks

We did a tour of AZ once...from the GC (camped there) to Nogales and all points in between (Sedona, Old Tucson, Seguaro (cactus) Nat'l Park, Sierra Vista and Tombstone, etc).

It also included CO Co Spgs/Garden of the Gods/Pike's Peak and the top and bottom of NM (4 Corners, Mesa Verde (camped there)/the Anastasi Cliff Dwellings and Las Cruces) as well as El Paso/Juarez.

I know, I pack a lot of places into one vacation...:D

From what I remember of Pheonix it was 1030 at night and 110F...bring ice!!:D

You might try the Heard Museum, I thought it was quite interesting & informative. http://www.heard.org/about/index.html The Phoenix Zoo is nice too http://www.phoenixzoo.org/ The Fish Market (on Camelback, E. of 16th st.) is the best place in town for seafood & sushi. You might also enjoy the Desert Botanical Gardens http://www.dbg.org/ You ought to pick up a copy of New Times (it's free) it'll list most, if not all the interesting things going on for the entire week. Regards, GF.

WOw, that is a lot of places. I'm looking at doing a 3 nights, 4 day thing and take my time and probably just see a couple major attractions. I'm afraid if i cram too much at once, I'll be more focused on making sure I see everything than enjoying what I'm seeing.

When do you plan to be out here?

Hopefully 2 weeks from now. Just got laid off and want to do a quick trip to unwind and reset my brain before I jump back into the workforce.

Cool, I'll look into those places. Thanks for the link to their sites. Is Phoenix known for any particular style food?

Look up Old World Brewery.
This is a startup brewery in a warehouse kinda area.
They have decent beer and will give you a brewery tour like you've never had... Not really so much a tour as "Go on back... take a look around, the BrewMaster loves to talk to folks", and he does.

Phoenix and Scottsdale have amazing world class resorts and restaurants, but not really a cuisine.

The closest thing to a cuisine would be a Sonoran Hot Dog or Estilo Sonora hot dog.

. It starts with a hot dog wrapped in bacon. Then you begin piling on the beans, grilled onions, fresh onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, cream sauce, mustard and jalapeno salsa. Add radishes, cucumbers, whole chilies and even mushrooms, if you want.

It might even be illegal because the bacon is supposed to be cooked in an approved kitchen. That generally doesn't happen because you generally find it on a cart or roach coach.

Damned shame, that was my favourite place to eat in PHX. Is the George & Dragon pub on Central still open? Or The Felsen Haus? (It's been a while since I was there). Regards, GF.

The Felsen Haus has been gone for quite some time. I miss their home made apple schnapps. I think I may still have one or two of their IV bottles around somewhere.
The George & Dragon are still there but the last time I was there, half of their offerings were out of stock.
