Finally got a used rootbeer keg. Ug, what a stink.

I replaced all the rubber and am soaking it in oxy. Hopefully, a good soak will get the smell off the poppets.

Try cleaning it with vinegar spray the hole thing down let it set for a couple of hours. Pour some baking soda in the bottom of the keg and let sit for a day. It should help you get the oder out.

I feel for you. The ONE time I caved in and used a little bleach.

If after a full day soak in oxy you still have the stink, consider soaking a full 5 gallons of water with 1 cup of bleach for 1 hour. Then rinse, rinse, rinse.

It will work very well, won't damage your SS, and save you days of frustration with Oxy. Don't forget to do the same with the tubes and fittings.

I've never had a problem with just a long Oxyclean soak in mine. I get mine straight from Pepsi and sometimes they even still have a little syrup in them. I replace all the o-rings, soak everything for 6-24 hours depending on how much time I have and the soda smell is gone.

i made a batch of seltzer in the r.b. keg i got. by the end, i was fine with it. porter first, then ipa, then anything.

I have the poppet valves and the pressure relief soaking in a strong oxy solution, and everything else stripped to bare metal and cleaned. All the rings are going to be replaced, the lid seal was squared, anyway.

It should be ready to take a dose of Dunkelweiss in a couple of weeks.
