What do you guys do when experimenting with recipes? obviously I don't want to do a full 5 gallon batch on a recipe I'm testing.

I brew 1 to 3 gallons. Depending on what I am testing I'll either ferment all 3 gallons together or split it into 3 one gallon fermenters. I make one gallon batches very often.

generally recipes scale.

however I do make 5 gallon test batches.
It takes a lot of variables out of testing. Same equipment, same fermentors, same procedure. The only change is the recipe.

My test batches are 7 gallons. Why go through all the same effort for a smaller batch. If it is really good, you will regret not having made more.

If you trust your ability, it should never be really too bad to drink; I guess it depends on how much of an experiment it is

Pretty much my theory, too. I brew 5 gal. test batches.

1 gallon test batches...and all batches too.
:mug:

Very useful for experimenting, I am SO GLAD that I only have 6 16ozers of my test BoPils recipe...nearly spit out the samply glass during bottling. I'll be aging them for a LONG TIME, but I doubt they will be any good...
