Can anyone tell me why it is a bad idea to chill a beer, let it warm to room temperature, and then chill it again?

Why do these temperature fluctuations have an adverse effect? And what effect do they have?

Probably not a great idea. Temperature affects the yeast which can lead to off flavors. Also, letting your beer get too hot can result in oxidation I think.
