Taking samples for gravity reading?

How do you guys normally go about doing this when using a carboy? A siphon seems difficult/messy for getting a small sample and a turkey baster isn't long enough to reach the beer without turning the carboy over.

Don't know where my text went. Use a wine thief like in the picture. Makes it very easy.

Agreed: wine thief. Looks like an autosiphon without the plunger, slightly larger diameter, so you can float the hydrometer in it.
