Straight from the bottle. Is it really that bad?

Maybe the better way to think of it is how much better it would be if you had poured it into a glass. Pretty hard to get any sense of aroma when drinking from a bottle.

I don't think the point is that drinking beer from a bottle is bad; the point is that doing so is an incomplete experience. There is more to appreciating a nice beer than the pouring of a cold fluid down your gullet--what it looks like and smells like are important, too.

If you think that is just hoity-toity nonsense, there are practical benefits to drinking from a glass as well. If you're drinking a bottle conditioned beer from the bottle, then every time you tip that bottle back and then upright again, you're stirring up bottle sediment into the beer.

Taste and aroma are intertwined - they impact each other. Your appreciation for the taste will be heightened if you can smell it, also.

It's not bad drinking from the bottle - but it could be better.

As long as there isn't lots of gunk in the bottle, i'm down. Sometimes i'll prefer leaving behind any excess yeast.

Maybe the OP is just slamming it down in one gulp!!

Yeah, pour it in a glass man, and if you like the yeast on the bottom (its good for you) then go ahead and slug that down from the bottle (do NOT ruin the good beer in the glass by pouring it in too, sheesh!). :)

I just got in a debate in another thread on glassware. I think you want to do everything you can to enjoy the aroma (which impacts flavor) of hoppy beers. For me, that's pouring into a glass that's narrower at the top than the bottom.

Is it the end of the world to drink from the bottle or a "shaker" pint glass, absolutely not. But if you went to the expense / trouble to homebrew with good hops, maximize the pleasure, drink in a tulip / narrow topped glass. They aren't expensive.

Oh wow...completely forgot I posted this. :)

Needless to say I was REALLY enjoying my brew on this particular evening.

To set the record straight, I DO have some nice beer glasses that I have been drinking MOST of the beer from. Get lazy every now and then though.

I drink all my bad beers from the bottle do to the above fact...

Certain mass-produced beers, for this reason, should always be consumed ice-cold and from the bottle, preferably whilst holding one's nose tightly shut.
