Are you checking for preservatives?

Some store bought juice has preservatives to extend shelf life that inhibit wild yeast and bacteria from growing in it but also keeps commercial yeast from fermenting it.

Generally speaking, yes. The juice manufacturers want the juice not to ferment on the store shelves and take steps to prevent this. You should carefully inspect the ingredient list for the addition of sorbate or benzoate. If either of those is in there, you won't have much luck getting a fermentation to proceed. Sometimes you'll see metabisulfite in there and that is OK to use, since wine yeast can tolerate it. Some juice (welches concord) is pasteurized and does not contain preservatives.

However, frozen whole fruit or frozen juices usually do not have added preservatives, so you might have better luck there.
