What size stoppers do I need for the plastic carboy? beer bottles for starters?

Better bottles have their own sized stopper. When I picked mine up the other day, the size reminded me of the "all in one" stoppers that are not solid but had the hole in the middle for the airlock and an outside wall that could adjust in size to the neck size of the carboy. The outside diameter was 2 3/8" at the top...

Hope this helps

Carboy caps all the way baby! I never use a bung if I can use a cap instead.
Not sure about the size for a beer bottle. Do they make sizes for beer bottles?

Oh, yes! The beer bottle size fits wine bottles, too, but they have two big of a hole (for the airlock) for me to see the number on it. Those are the size you use for the BMBF, and are PROBABLY around a #3. Might be a #4, though. You'd have to go to the store and see how it looked next to a bottle.
