My brother and I brewed a stone pale ale clone, recipe straight from the Stone book, and we ran into a few problems.

This is out first AG. First problem, which we always encountered with extract too, is that the color is extremely dark. It almost looks like a brown ale. Why are all of our brews so dark??

As far as taste, I'm getting a very sweet licorice flavor. Very malty with little to no hop. Our measurements during the boil were very precise. What could account for this?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Can you post the recipe and boil time? We will need that for troubleshooting purposes.

As for the low hop taste, this is a common problem with homebrewing. There are techniques on this forum that can be researched to gain greater hop character. Again, if you post the entire recipe we can help you.

I will post the recipe tonight. Thanks for the quick response!
