Stepping up with the same amount of DME?

question: what would be the impact of stepping up a starter using the same amount of wort each time?

for example, if i made a 1 liter starter, let the yeast do its thing, cold-crash, decant, then add the slurry to another 1 liter starter (same OG as the first)... is there any point in doing that? or does one need to step up to a bigger starter?

i'm not actually looking to do this, it's more of a mental exercise/trying to understand how the process works. thanks!
 
You need to increase the starter size each time. You get the best growth at a density 50 million cells per ml or less. That's equivalent to 1 smackpak in 2L. This ratio gives you just over double in growth. 1 smackpak in 1L only gives you about a .5 doubling factor where 1 smackpak in 2L is about 1.1 doubling (just over 2X the original count).

Cell density is the key for starters.
