I've done a cyser and a few ciders but would like to go all the way with a good mead this time. I was reading Buhner's 'Sacred and Herbal Healing Herbs' and he suggested boiling the honey before adding royal jelly Prepolis and pollen for a complete hive mead.
Wouldn't boiling ruin the honey? He seems to know his herbs but this confuses me.

Thanks

Boiling will certainly boil away some of the honey's aroma and flavor. Does he say why he suggests boiling?

I have no idea who Buhner is. He may be the world's leading expert on herbs but he doesn't know sh*t about making mead. Honey should not be boiled. If the boil is for extraction of the herbs put the honey in afterwards. I would echo MaxStout's suggestion to heat the honey to pasteurization temperature only.

Additionally, honey, by its very nature (low water content and high osmotic pressure), doesn’t really harbor nasties that’ll spoil a batch. No need to even pasteurized.
