I have not had this beer before, but one of my friends wanted me to try to brew this. Based off stuff that i have read, heres the recipe i came up with. Thoughts?


Ingredients
Amount Item Type % or IBU
1.00 lb Rice Hulls (0.0 SRM) Adjunct 7.4 %
8.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 59.3 %
4.00 lb Wheat Malt, Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain 29.6 %
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain 3.7 %
0.75 oz Centennial [10.00%] (60 min) Hops 23.8 IBU
0.50 oz Centennial [10.00%] (30 min) Hops 12.2 IBU
0.50 oz Centennial [10.00%] (15 min) Hops 7.9 IBU
1.00 oz Centennial [10.00%] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
1 Pkgs English Ale (White Labs #WLP002) Yeast-Ale

90 minute mash at 153

This is my first time coming up with my own recipe! And ive never used rice hulls, so not sure if i need a whole pound or not.

I would go with some late boil hops and up the dry hops, its a pretty hoppy beer. Otherwise it looks pretty good to me, although I'd guess that they use an American ale yeast.

I agree with old sock. Its been awhile since I had it, but it was one of my favorite summer beers (along with its smaller sibling Hop Sun).

My only thoughts would be to add another .5oz at KO. Maybe cut back the caramel to .25lb as its a light colored beer and you really dont want much color. Dont mash to high either...150-152 max. While Uber Sun is slightly imperialized, it shouldnt be too heavy. You want it to finish a bit drier to add to drinkability.

Sounds tastyto me. Depending on your water a few grams of gypsum in the mash/boil miught be a nice addition.

I think the use something closer to the chico strain or pacman since thats what the head brewer said in the little blurb about wheat beers in the newer byo.

The local brew store we will be going to only carries white labs yeast. Any suggestions for a white labs that close?

001 California Ale Yeast is a great strain for hop forward beers. 002 isn't a bad choice though, Stone does some good hoppy beers and that is supposed to be their house strain.
