I like it, except I think that's way too much black patent. Of course, I don't like it, so I think any amount is too much. Maybe 4 ounces would be better than 8, though. Especially with a nice malt like pilsner malt. I'd leave that out, and use the rest of the recipe. I'd do a 90 minute boil, because of the pilsner malt.

Thanks Yooper . I am looking for the roasted/smoked flavor I could use the Rauch I have, but was looking for more of a dark robust porter/stout type beer . I was thinking last night that maybe I should add some molasses maybe 1/2 to 1lb. Haven't made up my mind yet , this weekend is Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale so I have time to fine tune the recipe.

If you have Rauch sitting around... I would add between 2oz - 3oz of Black Patent, and then a healthy dose of Rauch. The Patent will darken it up a little, but still not be overpowering, and let the smoke come through. :)

The base recipe looks pretty solid.

I have 1lb of Rauch if I drop the black down to 3-4 oz how much Rauch should I add?

Rauch ain't strong - 1lb for a moderate smoky presence, drop it to .5 lb for a very soft presence.

1# rauch plus 3 oz Patent should make for an interesting balance of roast, bitterness, and smokiness. With the rauch in there, you might want to drop the flame-out hop addition.... Or maybe not?

I need to play around with more smoked pale ales and IPAs to get to know how the smoke + hop works together.

thanks for the input Yooper and Chriso

If you drop the Rauch, keep the Black Patent where it is, you can call it "Porter".

But for the Pils malt, it's pretty much a recipe straight out of Foster's Porter! And how often do you see a plain ol' porter these days?

I made this over the weekend . Took some pics but the damn camera or the card crapped out, Damn file error .

Came out a very nice rich color with nice smokey tones to the aroma. I'll post some of it in the carboy. Its bubbling along at 65* . the only thing I had to change was to use Safale05 when I hydrated the 04 it did nothing just clumped up and sank.

come to think of it this is the second time the 04 failed to do anything and I ordered them at the same time from the same place only a month old and kept in the fridge

Well this has been in the keg for 3 days and I tried some last night. I will make this again I was going to have just a taste and 3 pints later it just got better. very dark almost black in color The smoke flavor is very subtle with a slight chocolate linger and the mouthfeel is wonderful I dont think this will last long

Went from 1.064 to 1.016
