I wondered what type of smells I should expect from fermetation. This probably varies from brew to brew but I figured there should be a type of smell to knoe everything is going O.K.

You may smell all sorts of things.....fruity, bready, yeasty aromas....or maybe sulphurous aromas. RDWHAHB and wait until you can taste it post- primary. That'll be the best confirmation.

I wouldn't rely on smell... I had a Kolsch that I almost tossed because it smelled so foul. Turns out that was normal and it eventually mellowed out and was quite good. Anyway, most of my bathces reminded me of the way a pub smelled after a night of drinking but that's smelling the blow off water so who knows. Don't worry about the smell worry if t doesn't ferment :)
