OK, I got a chance to have an Original Sin regular cider after I bought my hydrometer, so I got to play with it after drinking a few.

Original Sin cider measured 1.008 SG out of the bottle, warmed up to 60° F so no other calibration needed other then subtracting 2 gravity points due to my hydrometer reading that much high (my hydro read 1.010, subtract 2 points due to it being that much off, and you get 1.008).

added Okanagan Crisp apple. Tastes like sweet and fizzy. Very disconcerting that it's a clear and colourless cider. It's appearance is almost identical to Sprite.

I guess I should get to that
I've just been putting things up a I drink them

It's comparable to most ciders on your list. Seems that it's the only one pubs sell on tap around here

the next time that I'm out buying cider I'll pick some up. Maybe I'll get one of The new Strongbow flavours too

Dang.... as a Yank, I wish I'd seen this list BEFORE I went up to Toronto last summer! Nevertheless, I did scope out some awesome ciders at some of the big LCBOs. My absolute favorite Canadian cider, hands down, is Brickworks Batch 1904. County also makes fantastic stuff. Wish I could find Gaymers but I couldn't find it anymore. :(

If you can ever find Crispin Brown's Lane, that stuff is great. I believe it's in the dark green can, and I believe they don't actually make it themselves but have it imported from UK. It's very similar to Magners or Gaymers but even better.

Now that I know that this thread exists, and I have in my possession probably 20 different commercial ciders, I'll start taking hydrometer readings when I remember, and help update. Yes, I'm a cider nerd.... perhaps one of the most nerdyist cider guys in the USA. I've kept tasting notes for more than 100 different commercial ciders so far, including Canada, USA, UK, Basque, you name it.

:rockin:

Next time I stop by my homebrew shop I'll pick up a hydrometer tube. I live pretty close to Bushwhacker Cider so I can test a bunch of harder to find cider.

I'm amazed at all these 1.020, 1.030 ciders. I thought dry was less than 1.008 and above that and up into the teens was sweet. My fresh blend made with 2/3 1.004 and 1/3 unfermented 1.055 isn't even 1.030!

Most Americans are idiots. I feel comfortable saying that because I am one. I would bring up just the simple word "politics" but that's not wise either..... forget I mentioned it.

:off: :D

I agree with both, and Cheers to WI dmtaylor!

I am really glad cider bottles now have the nutritional label on them. Most you can judge how dry it will be by the grams of sugar. or at least get a comparison. dryier side is under probably 10 and under for commercial cider i've seen. dunno what the equates to in SG. Some (a lot) have high teens and into the low 20's g. worth of sugar per serving. yuck.

I agree with both, and Cheers to WI dmtaylor!....

Right on. I like a semi sweet 1.010 to 1.012. The first cider I had was in the UK in 1989. All different brands and none were sickeningly sweet. Came back to the states and told my buddy how good it was and we went out and found some Woodchuck cider. Ugh, it was like drinking sugar syrup. Just awful, IMHO.

Right on. I try to kill yeast activity in my homemade ciders right there. My two batches this year turned out at 1.012 and 1.007. One tastes a touch too sweet, and one a touch too tart. Solution? If I wanted to I could just blend. But I don't. I enjoy each on their own merits. They're in the right ballpark anyway.

Just took another reading.

Willy's Cider (marketed as a medium dry) 1.014

I am surprised it is this high, seeing some of the other readings. It does have a nice dry mouth feel with a bit of tartness.

Gwynt y d'Draig: 1.015 Welsh Cider
Sheppy's Vintage Reserve: 1.015

I feel like my readings are a bit high but I double checked them and adjusted for for temperature.

I wish I would have found this thread a few days ago. I just fought my way through a 6 pack of Bulldog cider. I would have taken an sg on it had I thought to. Now I don't want to buy it again. It really was just not good. Horribly sweet with nothing at all to make up for it.
There was some sort of unidentifiable taste in there but... idk man.

:( No wonder cider is so unpopular here.

Luckily it's legal to make my own! :)

Bump...

Remind me next week to update this thread. I've got a hankerin' for some good cider, but unfortunately I'm on-call for work this week and thus cannot right now. :( But next week... :)

So I've been thinking. You know have craft beers have started printing their IBUs just cause some people hate bitter and others crave it? Maybe the time has come for commercial ciders to put the final S. G. on the label right next to the ABV.

I've been noticing the amount of sugar per serving more and more lately. this could be a start. you can start to make a conversion maybe.

Great list!

I just degassed measured Sam Smith Organic cider, one of my favorite ciders

Sam Smith Organic Cider 1.010 5%

Ive got a few other bottles in the fridge that I will degass and measure as I drink them. Ill re-measure Angry Orchard Stone Dry (not bone dry) because it seems higher than 1.005. It tastes around 1.009 to me.
