Separate gear for wild yeast brewing?

I captured some yeast and used it to make a batch of beer. My, who makes sours, made it sound like I might want to use separate gear when I do this. Is that really necessary? I've heard you want to do that for your sour beers, but I didn't think it was necessarily the same thing. I'd really hate to have to buy new gear.
 
I think people recommend separate gear for wild yeast because you may not have a pure yeast culture. There could be bacteria and other microflora mixed in with the wild yeast. Either way, many people at least prefer to use different plastic components, like vinyl tubing, siphons, and plastic fermenters.
