I've been lurking around the forum for a few weeks, and am getting ready to brew my first batch of sweet sweet nectar in the next two weeks. So I thought I'd create an account and say "Hi" to everyone.

I have a True Brew Maestro Equipment Kit and the first batch is going to be a Red Ale--Full-Bodied, 2-can kit producing a full bodied brew rich in flavor, with glorious red highlights.

I definitely want to get into whole grain brewing and use whole hops as well, but hey I have to start somewhere.

Cheers

Welcome to a great homebrew site! I get up your way about eight times a year. I have a camp in Snow Shoe, I'm from the York area.

Maybe we shoud refer to it as the "Heart of PA", seeing as how when most people say Central PA, they're really talking about the H'burg area.

There are a couple of people on the forum here who work at the Univ. I'm trying to get a couple more started too.

PS. I have a pig roast in July (usually) and serve only homebrew.

Thanks for all the welcomes!

I lived in HBG for 3 years and remember everyone referring to it as "central PA," but I am all for the "Heart of PA" label here in CENTRE county :cross: :D

You can count me as another of those who work and the Univ on this forum. Where do you get your supplies? The only thing I have found in the area is Delta-Blues in Manheim; but they're mail order only... no store. They will let you do a pick-up to save on shipping if you're local.

That July pig roast sounds like a great idea... only homebrew!

I've never bought from Delta Blues. The last couple of years I've managed to travel (or had a family member travel) near to one of the Country Malt warehouses and picked up bags of malt in person. For specialty grains and hops, I order on-line.

Warrior on this site (from the other Central PA) is organizing a bulk buy and another local (Zoebisch) has been communicating with him on getting some bags ordered. There was talk of trying to fill another pallet. I don't know the status of this other than it would have to be looked into ASAP.

just left the good ol' happy valley in May... Architectural Engineering graduate.

I didn't brew while I was in college, so no help on the supply shops.

There is a hardware store on Rt 26 above Pleasant gap that carries some homebrew supplies. He carries a lot more wine supplies as he's in to wine a lot more than beer. He can order anything you want. I forget the name of it but it's several miles above where the Rt 64 turnoff is to go to Bellefonte towards I-80.

Really? I hadn't heard of that, thx.

Delta Blue's Home Brewing Supplies is a "Local" home brew supply but it is internet only. I have ordered from there in the past, but it's a haul from State College if you don't want to pay shipping.

It's the Nittany Valley True-value hardware in Zion - actually further up Rt 64 towards Lamar, on the left headed towards Lamar. I've stopped out there once. Definitely wine focused. He had some brewing equipment, but not much in the way of ingredients - which I'll admit makes sense as it is really in the middle of nowhere and wouldn't turn over very fast. The guy was nice and he is willing to order stuff though. I've never followed up as it is ~17 mi away (about the same for Z) in a direction I don't head out much. If you needed some bottle caps, or a hydrometer right now of something like that then it might be worth it.

Thanks Warrior. I'll have to take a road trip sometime to see if I can find the hardware store you speak of.

Happy brewing!

Edit-
Thanks pjj2ba! Now I know exactly where to look. I live on the north side of Bellefonte so it might not be too far from me.

Just an update for everyone in the area. I stopped by this shop over the weekend. While I agree with everything pjj2ba says, I will say this guy has just about anything you could ever want as far as equipment goes, and at an affordable price. Carboys are $30 for a 5 gallon. He even has a few Brewers Best ingredient kits.

Happy brewing :mug:

He does have a good equipment selection. If you plan ahead he will order any kits or ingredients you want. He does not stock liquid yeast but can get them.

I grew up in central PA. Spent 21 years there and then I moved to the big city. Somedays I miss it up there.
