has anyone ever tried to make hard alcohol. We make beer so hard stuff can't be much different. I know rum is made from cane sugar. It is fermented, the distilled, then aged in barrels. Does anyone know how to make rum, or any website were is describes how to make it. I think it might be a fun thing to try.

My guess is that it has more to do with taxation and protecting the interests of the big commercial distillers.
