A friend gave me a Bourbon Barrel Porter kit with 2 oz of medium toast oak cubes included. The kit instructions said to soak cubes in 16 oz of Maker's Mark for 1-2 days. I noticed the cubes had some carbon dust on them, but just tossed them in 8 oz of Makers (16 oz seemed overboard for 5 gallons) The Makers turned very dark and now I think I should have rinsed the dust off the cubes. Should I filter the bourbon through a coffee filter to remove the fine carbon particles or does it really matter? I am concerned about the carbon dust making the beer feel like charcoal on the tongue.
Thanks for and insight.

Are you sure the carbon dust you're referring to isn't "toasted oak" color? I just opened a bag from that same kit 2 days ago and they are charred, but they're supposed to be for the flavor.
