I got my hands on some 1 1/4 inch copper pipe and fittings and set to soldering yesterday to build the heating chamber for my RIMS. When I went to screw in the element however, I found that it would touch the pipe pretty much no matter what.

Contact between element and conductive copper tubing is a total deal-breaker right? Either for heat or electrical issues I can't imagine how this can be okay. Anybody ever run into this?

The element is filled with a white powder and a coiled thin wire, so touching the sides won't be an electrical problem, but the contact will be a really good at transferring the heat. 1.5" works for the single out and back elements, but ive had to step up to a leftover section of 2" for the elements that are folded back on themselves.

The following may work. I bought the 1500 watt low density element for $11.46. The element is 7/8" wide, 7 1/2" long and has a 1" NPSM thread. It should give you 3/16" clearance on each side. No use hammering an element and risking damage. They are available from www.PlumbingSupply.com.

Model #.....Volts..Watts.....Density........Price
02853..........120....1500......Extra Low......$20.12
02463..........120....1500......Low..............$11.46
02953..........240....4500......Extra Low......$27.69
02933..........240....5500......Low..............$21.87
02963..........240....5500......Extra Low......$26.92
02613..........240....6000......Low..............$22.82

:off:

What is the difference between Low and Extra Low Density elements? Sorry :off:

I also would like to know what low, extra low, ultra low, etc elements mean.

High watt density will be like 150W per square inch.
Low watt density will be like 75W per square inch.
Ultra low watt density is like 50W per square inch.

Thank you Pol for a helpful answer.

Now I must ask, PSI of what?

Per Square Inch of surface area on the element... ULDW elments are folded back, mine is even rippled to create more surface area.
