I'm curious what you think of the the bottom centennial rhizome. That bottom one is just about the saddest rhizome I've seen. Has anyone bought a rhizome that showed up looking as scraggly as this? Would you call the seller?

my cascade rhizomes looked just as sad. i paid for 1 order that was supposed to be two cuttings, but i think they sent 4 out of pity. don't fear, that little shoot sticking off the top is a dead giveaway. you're likely in good shape. :)

Ya know, my centennial rhizome was a bit scimpy too. But, my crown is heading into it's 4th year now and doing fine. I actually had a couple of CTZ rhizomes that were so pitiful looking and took so much longer to sprout than my others that I almost gave up on them. I planted them together. Ended up being my prize crown. Its my fastest growing most robust plant now. You just never can tell about these things.

I'd rather not get into that whole "it's not the size of the rhizome, it's the magic that it performs" thing, but just saying that this concern about the Size of rhizomes is really not a big issue. Most folks who have grown 'things' for a while, realize that if there is a healthy looking bud on a on a plant part, there's a good chance that it will grow. A more important consideration would be the general 'condition' of the rhizome. As long as it's not wilted/shriveled and looks healthy it has just as good of a chance to produce a nice plant as the next one. And your rhizomes look fine! Get to it!

It's got the big shoot off the top, and a little white node under it, so there will be no problem. I had worse looking guys last year and they all had some growth by the end of the summer, and 8 of 10 varieties produced cones.

I started with 11 centennial's 7 were sad like that and they grew just as much as the others. 3 yrs later as im diging them up to move everyting those are the biggest now.
