Had a bottle of Highland's Little Hump Spring Ale the other day and I'm looking to brew something similar, not necessarily trying to clone.

The bottle reads: "Brewed with grains from America's heartland, using Simcoe hops for bittering and dry hopped with Amarillo and Cascade for aromatics. Beer finishes crisp and clean."

To me it just tastes like a lighter, crisper pale ale. The color is closer to a lager than it is a pale ale and it looks like it's about 4.5% abv.

Anyone familiar with this beer who has suggestions or could provide some help would be appreciated. Thinking about doing an all grain batch this weekend.

Just as a heads up, lager vs ale has no bearing on color. This is a lager.

I would say check out the Centennial Blonde recipe and play around with the late addition hops for what you want. Added a half oz each of Cascade and Amarillo and dryhop with those as well. Should get you in the ballpark.

Good point. I've had the Sixpoint crisp ale and the lagunitas little sumpin in the last week. Both are hoppy ales, and both were light, clear, and crisp.

I'm interested also in cloning this beer. I emailed the brewery and got no response and also saw on their fb page that someone tried to get info and they were tight lipped.
The beer is light on bitterness and heavy on the flavor and aroma hops on the back end with a dry finish. It does not have the sweetness that a pale ale like sierra nevada pale ale has, much lighter color also.
I'm thinking something like this as a wild guess to start the conversation

mash low 148*F 60 min
9# 2row
.5# crystal 20

1 pound sugar

.5 oz simcoe 60
.5 amarillo 30
.5 cascade 30
.5amarillo 10
.5 cascade 10

1.5oz amarillo Dryhop
1.5oz cascade dryhop

Thanks!

I dropped off a few bottles of Little Hump to the guys at my LHBS the other day and I'm waiting to see what they come up with. They've been very helpful in the past re: recipes. I'm going to probably cross reference this recipe with whatever they come up with. I'll let you know when I hear from them.

I picked up a single of this about a month ago and thought it was awesome. I went searching for more, but couldn't find it around here anywhere and assume it's all gone for this year anyway. I'm interested to see what your LHBS comes up with. Anyway, I haven't brewed this one yet, but here's my guess...

Mine was just a stab, you would need to put it to a computer program to calculate the OG. I could be off. I thought it should be something like 1.048-1.050
I put the sugar to dry the beer out abit. May be too much.
Interested in what your lhbs says.

This is one of my favorite seasonals that has come out of a Southeastern brewery this year. I'm making something that will be similar. I'm starting off with a Blonde Ale base.

9.5 lbs American Two Row
.5 Vienna Malt

It's got to finish pretty low because the taste is very dry

Bittering hops (haven't decided on those yet) pretty low, guessing IBUs around 25 or so.
Lots of Simcoe for the late additions. Simcoe piney-ness shines through even the Amarillo and Cascade dry hopping.
Amarillo and Cascade to dryhop. .5 oz to an oz of each for about 10 days I'd think.

Neutral yeast strain like 1056 or 1272, something that can get it down to about 1.010 or so where it needs to be.

Highly carbed, which adds to the hoppiness as well.

Well, here's what they came up with. You guys were pretty close. Going to brew it on Saturday.

I decided to go with Wyeast 1272. I'll let you know how it turns out in a few weeks.

I too am a pretty big fan of this beer when I had it last year and noticed on their website they gave a little bit of detail on the grist.

This is what I'm going for this weekend. I'll post results in a few weeks.

I hate to resurrect a thread, but it just picked up a sixer of this and I love it! I was just curious to see how things turned out. I did read on their website that they used two-row, caramel 20, and carapils to get 4.5% ABV. Then it says simcoe for bittering Amarillo and cascade for aroma, dry hopped in parenthesis, to get 32 IBU's. I was thinking something similar to what y'all have, but am unsure about the hop schedule. With such a light, clean finish, I'd hate to over hop it. I recently did that with my IPL and it was pretty rough. With a good two months lagering it was great.
