Hey folks,

me and my brew neighbour are planning a BIAB batch next weekend. we need to get 5gals each to make it worthwhile. recipe below based loosely on Sierra Nevada IPA recipe plus a few others additions I want/need to get out if my fridge. I have a 50litre boil kettle so about 12 us gals. All advice welcome.

17lbs marris otter
2 lb crystal 60L
1lb CaraPils malt
Mashed together at 154F for 1. 5 hour, sparged in 170F water.

Hops will be
1oz of magnum @ 60
1oz pearle @ 20
1oz cascade @10
1oz centinal @10

I just took the temps from another recipe. What would you recommend? I should have said that we are going for 10 gals final volume.

Hey Druma. I'm pretty new to all this, but if you wanna do a single batch of 10 US gallons you're probably going to need a bigger BK. Sparging will help save some room during mash, but I would anticipate your preboil volume will need to be at least 12-13 gallons or so.

Maybe you could research maxiBIAB. I think you'll have to employ some of the techniques of that method if you want to stick with the 50 liter boil kettle.
 
Yes, a true 10 gallon batch in a 12 gallon kettle will need to be stretched and squeeked a few ways. You will need a sparge, and may also want to reserve a gallon or two of the runnings to add as you boil off. A couple three more pounds of base malt might not be a bad idea either as your efficiency may suffer.

Would not make you a bad person to top up the batch with a gallon or two of water post boil as well.

For a first batch, perhaps a five gallon would be easier, but I like your aggressive nature so proceed as you may.

Strike water should be 160 - 162 IME prior to adding the grain for a mash target in the low 150's.

50 liters equals 13us gals so will I be alright? We're more interested in getting to have a go at all grain than worrying too much about the finer points of the process. What would be the max volume you'd recommend?

A 10 gallon batch is doable but a bit of a stretch and you will need to sparge and boil a full keggle, and might need to top up w a little water as well.

Go for it if you feel the desire! I am not meaning to discourage, even if it might be a bit lofty for a first batch...damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

An update, So we made the beer today. OG was 1.052 using the bill above. We got 20 liters each so happy days. Should have something in around 5% when it finished. We dunked the grain bag a few times and mixed the grain in between dunks. Great fun and it tastes great. Go BIAB

It was that easy. It helped having a good bag and an electric hoist. It took 8 hours though but we got 40 litres of beer so it was worth it
