So I brewed a pumpkin pie brown ale. Had a huge problem with stuck a stuck sparge as the pumpkin was so stringy and sticky. I feel like i lost a lot of wort trying to get it fixed. Any advice for next time?

For sticky mashes I add half a pound to a pound of rice hulls (5-6 gallon batch) and although the lautering is still slow, it does drain. Pumpkin puree is among the worst in that regard.

If it gets stuck, you can always add (more) rice hulls, stir well and try again. Blow some air back to clean the manifold/braid.

+1 on the rice hulls, assuming your mash tun can handle. They don't add any fermentables or flavors so use as much as you need to prevent a stuck mash

Rice Hulls definitely do the trick... last year I used 1Lb of Rice Hulls for my 5.5 Gallon batch that included about 2.5lbs of cooked pumpkin. This year I stepped it up a bit to 4.5lbs of Pumpkin, so I upped the Rice Hulls to 2lbs accordingly. The mash/sparge did take quite a bit longer to empty out, but I was definitely able to get all the wort out with enough stirring and patience.

What was your mash ratio? Increase to 1.75 qts per lb of fermentables if your mash tun can handle that much volume. +whatever on the rice hulls
