I am somewhat of a beginner and have a few all grain batches under my belt. Is it incorrect to assume that the finer the crush the better? Is the idea to crush the grain as fine as possible while getting a clear run off, and without getting a stuck sparge ?

There is a saying I have read "Crush until you are scared".
I would agree with your assumption but, I bet there is a point of diminishing return based on the crush. If you are getting good efficiency then there does not seem to be a compelling reason the crush finer. It seems that would be asking for trouble.

I believe that the more you shred the husks, the more likely you are to get more tannin extraction (in addition to the obvious issue of stuck sparges).
