quick question-

I just bottled my first two batches. Each came with a 5 oz priming sugar included. Yet when I poured it in the measuring cup, it measured about 8 oz.

What gives?

5oz of weight is about 8 oz measured in a cup, especially if it's fluffy. So weigh it, don't measure it in a cup....
Now if they'd said that it came with 140 grams of priming sugar, it wouldn't have been so confusing!

They will be less fizzy. Depending on your style, and what type of sugar it was (corn sugar?) as to what the priming sugar amount should be. One calculator for instance is at http://www.brewersfriend.com/beer-priming-calculator/ but I don't know if it's the best.

So 4 oz of corn sugar in a 5 gal batch (assuming room temp at bottling) gives you about 2.2 atmospheres, at the low end for american ales.
