I thought I knew what the term primary fermentation meant. I was always under the impression it was the primary growth phase of the yeast and lasted appx 3 days or less. What is your definition ? Another brewer I know told me it means the entire time until terminal gravity is reached, is that correct ? Thanks and sorry for asking a question I really should know.

Your friend is right. It is the entire time until final gravity is reached.

Or, for a lot of us it is through fermentation and longer to let the suspended debris in the beer settle out. Then to bottles or kegs.

Yup. It's the time from pitching the yeast till FG is reached. In commercial breweries,it goes to a secondary, which is only used as a bright tank to settle the beer out clear before bottling or kegging.
