Point-of-Use 120v tankless water heaters

Anyone ever think about one of these thing for doing step mashes? i've been toying with the idea, but don't have a pump right now.

Thinking i could get a standard 120v with a 'normal' US plug and just get a pump to recirculate trough it for step mashing, because with my home malt. i'm doing A LOT of steps... (protein rest at 125f, beta rest at 150f, alpha rest at 162f. and it's becoming a pain)

In other words....a RIMS system. With a POU water heater. Is that what you have in mind?

How would you control the temp of the mash and the heater?

yes, but, temporary RIMS system. and i'd probably just turn on the water heater and the pump. and i figured just stick my thermometer in the mash tun to see when it got it to the next step. i use a 10gal round cooler and it holds temp pretty good. so it would just save me effort having to pull out of the mash tun, bring to a boil on the stove in a pot, and add back to it. and it take quite a few small pots while my kettle is heating sparge water..

Think it would work? looking at 100-150 for both the pump and POU water heater.

I imagine one could cobble a control loop together using something as simple as an STC-1000 - and a big honkin' relay, because from what a cursory look indicates most of those heaters are up in the 3KW range which would smoke the 10A relays in the controller...

not exactly it, but sorta....i've seen a lot of 120v models, that only use 1.2kW-1.5kW

That 120V models needs a 30A feed and looks like .5 gpm rated?
That seems pretty typical, though if you've found one that uses something that won't pop a typical 15A breaker it likely has a commensurately slower flow rate....

For that amount of money you can put together a real RIMS system made of stainless steel components.
POU heaters have brass components, unless you like lead in your beer you should steer clear of those.
