I read something where Helltown is out on Rivertowne. They wanted the Export and Monroeville properties included and there was no easy way to make that happen.

My understanding is that their original bid was for the Export, Monroeville, & Verona locations, but it wasn't enough to cover all the debt so they ended up with just the brewery & tasting room in Export, as well as intellectual property rights. The Verona site closed last weekend with very little notice - I realize probably nobody here beside me cares about this, but it was my local spot & I'm pretty bummed about it. Plus it was the beginning of the entire Rivertowne brand, which means there's no actual river town associated with the beer now.

FWIW I have fond memories of the Verona and Monroeville locations. Sad to see both close.

Going to be in the Pittsburgh area over the holidays. Looks like one afternoon, my wife and I are going to do high tea and then hit a couple of breweries, possibly with her mother. We're staying with her parents in Sewickley, so side of the city doesn't much matter, but I was looking at breweries that may be close-ish to hit more than one. I've been to a fair number of breweries in the city, but there are a couple I'd still like to hit. Would you all recommend an afternoon of:

Brew Gentlemen and Voodoo (I've been to BG a few years ago and loved it; I'm a fan of Voodoo, but have not been to any of their locations)

or

Dancing Gnome and 11th Hour/Strange Roots (have never been to Dancing Gnome; have been to 11th Hour at night and enjoyed it well enough, plus Lawrenceville is cool; went to Strange Roots many years ago when it was Drai Laag and, while certainly not blown away, enjoyed that they were different).

Would like somewhere reasonably comfortable (not too cold, possibly with have mother-in-law driving us around and hanging out with us) and preference would be to food-adjacency (decent snacking, at least). As much as I loved BG, they didn't have food other than a food truck (which is all good with us, as long as there is one). I don't know what Voodoo's spot is like, but I'm currently leaning towards BG/Voodoo if there are food options in reasonable proximity. Thanks all!

EDIT: We're also not hazeboi hypebeasts. We're looking for a high quality afternoon and not to stand around waiting for cans. I'm interested in DG if it's easy, but we aren't looking to stand in line just for a limited release.

I would second BG/Voodoo and also say swing by Enix which is only a few blocks from Voodoo. Enix has a pretty good kitchen and would be my recommendation for food from those three. If you go the Dancing Gnome route, I'd also suggest Hitchhiker which is right there and some combination of Roundabout, Cinderlands and 11th Hour which are all roughly in a line from each other across the river. Of these, Cinderlands is the best food option as they are a brewery/restaurant combo.

Thanks, both. Definitely looking like BG/Voodoo, and I'm interested in Enix. Good looking out.

We went to Cinderlands some time ago and didn't have a great food experience. We ordered foie gras (or pate, can't remember) and it was pretty much inedible. The "vegetarian" we were there with ate pretty much all of it.

Personally, I would suggest skipping Voodoo altogether and go to Independent Brewing Company after Brew Gentlemen. It's only an extra 5+ minutes from Voodoo and has some delicious food along with my favorite draft selection in the city. Funnily enough, they will have beer from every local brewery except for Voodoo.

bramsdell

The same folks who run Independent also do Lorelei which is a lager-centric beer hall. Cool place.

Another group of options closer to the city is to hit up Piper's, Fat Heads and Carson St Deli. All within a short walk from each other. Pipers and Carson St will have a lot of local options from the breweries you are looking at.

Anyone here fast enough to grab an Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon today? I think it lasted all of 30 seconds... (from someone who wasn't fast enough).
