Hey guys, just pitched 2 viles of WLP300 yeast that expired about 9 months ago. My friend at my LHBS gave it to me for free and said it would be fine...

I noticed when i cracked open the vile it fizzed up pretty good. is that the CO2 coming off?

Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else has pitched expired yeast and had any problems.

Just make a starter to wake it back up and as long as it seems alright, then all is well!

+ 1 on making the starter. That's really the only way to know if the yeast are still viable. You don't want to just directly pitch that old vial into your wort not knowing if it will take off or not.

ahhh, im sorry people. I'll learn better for next time!

Second question....Will using expired yeast change the product that the yeasties give off?
