I have been too cheap so for to buy a pH test meter, but I did get some strips and pH buffer (5.2) to try and aid my mash efficiency. However, no matter how much or little I use, my strips turn a color nowhere near the range they are supposed to.

I am testing the water at about 150 if that makes any difference!
 
yep, pH is affected by temperature, as are the reagents used to test pH. your color is getting skewed.

as long as you keep those strips air tight and room temp, they'll last a long time.
