Hey,

Thought I might buy a pH meter. I would use for brewing and also for charcuterie. Hopefully can find one meter that can use a meat probe and a probe for brewing, rather than buy two meters.

I have read some threads and a helpful page at braukaiser. Milwaukee and Hanna seem the main choices.
Milwaukee has the 56, the 101 and also 102 models in my price range. I would rather like to keep the costs down, as it is difficult to justify a pH meter (incl probes, calibration and storage solutions) costing more than $250 including the additional probe. Any others to consider?

As far as features, to me being dependable and accurate enough for brewing are the most important considerations.
I don't know if Automatic temp correction is more harmful than helpful from what I've read, testing at higher temps can lead to probe early failure.
Being water resistant could be a nice feature, though it seems doubtful that I would be careless with it.
Ability to test TDS and other stuff isn't important or necessary for me. Support for a meat probe however is very important.

Any helpful advice welcomed.

I have been using the 101 for about a year now. its been working great, and much more consistent than my previous pen type. store the probe properly and it should last a long time. when the probe does fail, its easily replaced. I also like that it takes a normal 9v battery.

Thanks!

I ended up emailing Milwaukee and got the lowdown on the meat probe that I'll need.
I ended up ordering the 102 that has the ATC feature though I understand to only test cooled samples to preserve probe life. I see that there are reviews both good and bad for pretty much all the meters/probes I looked into. The meat probe is a bit pricey, but beats having to buy an entirely different meter, plus I think I can even use it on wort if I wanted.
Do you store the probe in their special storage solution between uses?
Thanks

The storage solution is fairly standard (i.e., you don't have to buy Milwaukee's version of it), but yes, it's said to be important to use it. The probe comes with a rubber cap that can be filled with a few mL of that solution, so you don't use it very quickly.

right on about the storage solution. should be able to pick some up on amazon or ebay for under 10 bucks. or find someone that works in a lab, etc. let us know how it works out!

Where else, amazon.

I can't get the meat probe through amazon though. Can't find a seller. Rather alarming what type of laboratory materials that anyone can purchase on amazon.

Okay Thanks.... I found a couple places cheaper than Amazon but not sure I trust them? They carry both the MW101 & 102 among other accessories:
