I am slightly confused by John palmer's brief description of a partial mash. It will be my first time attempting partial mash, and my second time brewing. So I am confused as to whether I mash the extract along with the grains?

Thank you

When I did partial mash I followed those instructions and generally mashed for ~50% of my gravity points. A few times I decided to add my extract at the end of the boil instead of the beginning. (search late extract addition for more on that). So the short answer is that most people add it after the mash is finished, either at the beginning or end of the boil.

EDIT: Beat to it on all counts.
