partial keg and partial bottle from 5 gallon batch ok?

Is it ok to fill say 12-24 bottles and put the remainder of a 5 gallon batch in a corny keg? Will the extra space create any problems?

I figure the CO2 replaces the air space and it is ok but wanted to make sure..

Why not do it in reverse? Rack into the keg, get it under serving pressure, then push it into the bottles using the BMBF?
