Hey guys. Wanted to start another conversation around the notion of organic brewing.
I'm looking to brew (as close to) organic versions of a few of the popular recipes from this site (Irish Red by Mystic, Centennial Blonde by BM). For the Centennial, I was able to source all organic malts from NorthernBrewer, except for the Vienna. Not bad.
So my first question is:
1) Is buying "organic" malt really necessary from non-U.S. countries? I know alot of the EU has banned things like glyphosate, and I'm wondering if that's why it's tough to find organic malt other than Briess. Maybe the assumptions behind my hunt for organic Maris Otter are wrong.
Second part of that question - I did find that Weyermann does indeed sell some organic malts, however, I haven't had any luck in sourcing anything other than Briess (Northern Brewer), even with the tips in the other organic threads. I see they're available to commercial buyers.
2) Anyone have a good source of anything other than the Briess stuff? (i.e. organic Vienna, MO, etc.). I'm in NJ but am used to driving far or ordering ingredients online.
Lastly, hops:
3) Does anyone know if "organic hops" even make sense? I could see a scenario where hops aren't really prone to pests and the use of pesti/herbicide is normally at a minimum in "conventional" hop cultivation. I just don't know - looking for some of your experienced opinions.
Sooo looking for everyone's experience in terms of organic brewing. Feel free to pipe in even if you don't have a specific answer. Thanks in advance.
