One quick question about the OG of my just finished batch.

so the og on the houblonmonstre ipa i just made says it is supposed to be at 1.082, but my hydrometer reading says that it is at 1.062. the temp is good, i swirled the hydrometer. why would it be so much lower than what it is supposed to be? also, what all effects the hydrometer reading?

Was this an extract brew? Was it topped off with water? I believe hydrometers measure the amount of sugar in a solution.

If it was an extract brew, it's possible that the extract and top off water weren't mixed well prior to taking the reading. This is a common issue. With extract, as long as your wort volume is correct then the OG should be fine.

Did you adjust your hydro reading to reflect the temp of your test sample?
